LAURINGBURG, N.C. — Alice Haines Nobles, 94, widow of J. Ray Nobles and formerly of Newberry, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Scotia Village Nursing Facility.

She was born on May 29, 1918, in Cabarrus County, N.C., the daughter of the late Joseph B. and Mary Belle Eudy Haines.

After graduating from the Women’s College of North Carolina, Mrs. Nobles taught in the local schools. After marriage she moved to Newberry where she taught physics, chemistry, and biology at both the high school and junior high school.

Mrs. Nobles was a member of Central United Methodist Church and Circle 4 of the United Methodist Women. She was active in the Calvin Crozier Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the American Association of University Women.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. John and Penny Nobles of Bennettsville; grandchildren, Caitlin (John) Horne and Erin Nobles all of Charlotte, N.C. and Phillip Nobles of Bennettsville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tresco Shannon. Interment will follow at Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.

Pallbearers will be Jamie Henderson, Tommy Henderson, Hayne Folk, David Folk, Wayne Folk, John Folk, Chase Folk, Ren Henderson, and Marvin Bost.
