NEWBERRY — The Newberry Community Choir present its annual Easter musical - Alone on the Altar - on Palm Sunday weekend, March 22 – 24. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m. and a Sunday performance at 3 p.m.
This year’s 50 voice choir includes singers and soloists from Newberry and Saluda Counties representing over 20 area churches. One of the members, Tom Perry, also wrote the narrative that accompanies the musical story of the Passion. From the perspective of Crassus, a Roman centurion present at the crucifixion, the audience relives the last week of Christ’s life on this earth. The excitement of Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem where he was hailed as King to the cruel flogging and persecution on a cross are all seen through the eyes of this centurion. Crassus carries the pain of one who participated in the crucifixion, and yet shares the joy of one who has been forgiven. His story is ours because Christ stood alone on the altar, we have the opportunity to be forgiven as well.
The performances are in the Newberry Elementary School auditorium and is free to the public. The play is narrated by Tom Perry and created by Randy Vader and Jay Rouse.
