NEWBERRY — Newberry College designated hitter Bradley Nichols has been named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week.

Nichols, a true freshman from Winter Springs, Fla., is Newberry’s first position player of the week since 2005 and his performance in the series at Lincoln Memorial last weekend is one of the more remarkable stories this season.

On Wednesday, Nichols was not a member of the Wolves’ varsity squad. On Thursday, head coach Russell Triplett called Nichols up from the junior varsity squad for the LMU series in an effort to re-energize the lineup.

Despite a 1-2 weekend for the scarlet and gray, Nichols undoubtedly did his part to bolster the offense.

For the weekend — and at this point, his entire collegiate career — Nichols hit for a .769 average (10-for-13) with two homeruns, eight runs scored and eight RBIs, with a .812 on-base percentage and 1.385 slugging percentage.

He hit an RBI double in his first collegiate at bat, and went 4-for-5 with a homerun, a double and three RBIs in his first varsity game on Friday.

In Saturday’s 24-4 blowout win, he went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two walks and four runs scored. In the series finale, Nichols was 3-for-3 with a three-run homerun and two runs scored, reaching base safely in all four appearances.

Nichols and the Wolves hosted Francis Marion on Tuesday and play at Augusta State at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The next SAC series is at Lenoir-Rhyne with a single game at 6 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday in Hickory, N.C.
