NEWBERRY — After sending several request for information, Newberry freelance writer Sue Summer is taking action against S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson.
Summer made several requests for information in the fight over the settlement of entertainer’s James Brown’s estate.
Summer, who writes columns and other items for The Observer, has requested Wilson release a diary from the woman who claims she was the soul singer’s wife in 2006 when he died.
She also requested copies of a contract between Wilson and a private attorney concerning another lawsuit related to the settlement.
“As the complaint states, Sue Summer requested public records from the AG’s office on four occasions last year. Her requests were denied,” said Summer’s attorney Tom Pope. “The Freedom of Information Act was passed by the S.C. Legislature to guarantee public access to public documents. Both journalists and the general public have a right to receive public documents from public agencies such as the Attorney General’s Office. Either as a journalist or as a private citizen, Sue Summer’s lawsuit asserts her right to see those records.”
