NEWBERRY — A part of history came alive Sunday afternoon when Sam B. Davis spoke to the Newberry County Historical and Museum Society about the 3rd South Carolina Battalion.

Davis recently wrote “A History of the 3rd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Battalion (James Battalion): 1861-1865” about the volunteer infantry battalion.

Davis, a native of Laurens, said the part of the book he is most happy with is the biographical information about each soldier. The detailed information contains a transcription of the service records and is in alphabetical order.

Davis said there were 200 soldiers in the 3rd South Carolina Battalion. The casualty list he discovered is up to 140 although in the book it’s at 133. The casualties include those captured, killed, wounded and missing in action.

In other news related to the historical society, the group has a museum at 1503 Nance St. that is open the first and third Saturday of each month as well as by appointment. Contact Ernie Shealy to schedule an appointment.

Shealy said they recently acquired a couture wedding dress with a label that appears to be out of Columbia.

The group is also working on a partnership with the Newberry Fire Department for a museum building on Wilson Road.

The next meeting of the society is June 23. Members will travel to Little Mountain to a home on Daisy Crossing. The home is a historical home and the group enjoys having their meetings in historical homes in the county where they can learn more about history on site.
