NEWBERRY — The Newberry High varsity baseball team picked up its third straight win Monday after completing a sweep of Whitmire High.

The 10-run “mercy rule” fell into effect during both games with the J.V. Bulldogs taking the first game, 13-1.

The first batter for Newberry in each inning got on base including Dee Gallman, who never saw a strike in his lead-off walk.

A two-base fielding error to first advanced Gallman to third as he would score while Ryan Huggins was being thrown out at first two batters later. Trey Kinard brought Ryan Huggins home with a single later in the inning.

Six runs scored for Newberry in the second inning with 11 Bulldogs coming to the plate.

The Wolverines scored its lone run in the third before Newberry would answer with five unanswered scores as the game was also called due to time.

Huggins picked up the win while Andrew Livingston earned the save.

Ben Blackmon hit two doubles for Newberry and was hit by a pitch. Kinard hit two singles and was also hit by a pitch while Justin Busby took two walks before hitting a single.

Seventeen runs crossed the plate for the Newberry varsity in the first two innings of their game as they won in 4.5 inning of play, 21-1.

Kevis Burton faced eight Wolverines in his two innings on the mound before giving way to Cannon Griffith, who picked up the save for the Bulldogs.

Tysheen Nance hit a single and Griffith, who was hit-by-pitch, reached base to lead off the bottom of the first before Nance was brought home by Jack Huggins’ single.

A 2-1 center field double off the bat of Chad Davis brought home Griffith and Jack Huggins as Newberry had a 3-0 lead before seeing their first out registered. Two more runs would cross home plate for Newberry in that inning.

Three different Wolverine pitchers saw action in the Newberry second as they combined to face 17 Bulldogs.

With the bases loaded and one out, Burton took a 1-0 pitch into right center field for the grand slam.

The last nine Newberry batters saw two strikes on their count during this inning.

A brief mist started sending a few fans home during the fourth inning but the teams never slowed down in hopes of getting to the middle of the fourth inning so it could be an official game.

Leading by 16 in their half of the fourth inning, 12 Newberry batters came to plate.

With runners on at least second base 10 straight times, Newberry head coach Lindsey Stribble allowed only one batter to score during each at bat, despite how deep each hit went.

Jack Huggins led the Newberry hitting with two singles and a double.

Hercules Etheredge and Parker Little each hit two singles while Nance hit a single and a double.

Newberry will have a twin-bill on Friday with the opening of region play against Saluda.

The annual Newberry county J.V. Baseball Tournament begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Bulldogs hosting the Wolverines.

Around 11 a.m. Whitmire will face the junior varsity of Mid-Carolina while the day will conclude around 1 p.m. with the Bulldogs and the Rebels squaring off.

Tournament T-shirts will be available for sale that day as well as plenty of food items including chicken bog prepared by former coach Mike Ware.
