NMS boys excel in basketball

NEWBERRY — Newberry Middle School boys basketball team finished the season with a 10-2 overall record.

On the season the Tigers averaged 53 points per game and only gave up 33 points per game.

In the final two games of the season, Newberry pounced the Panthers of Batesburg Leesville 50-32 and defeated county rival Mid Carolina 49-42.

Tyrell Mendenhall led the way for the Tigers against Batesburg scoring 13 points.

Other scorers against Batesburg were Derrick Scurry with eight points, Tariq Goodman with seven points, Khaleed Hare with six points, Sentrell Quattlebaum with six points, Malcolm Aiken with six points.

Aiken led all scorers against the Rebels scoring his season high 15 points.

Mendenhall complemented Aiken by adding a double double with 12 points, 10 rebounds. Scurry added 10 points in the victory.

Other scorers were Quattlebaum with six points, Goodman scored three, Robert Houston made two points, and Hare a point.

Other team members that provided outstanding minutes throughout the season were P.J Wright, Rodney Grey, Terrel Rogers, Jaleel Gilliam, Trey Kinard, Julian Edgerson, Jaleen Stewart and Tyrese Gilmore.

“I am very proud of the way these young men showed class and enthusiasm throughout the season. These young men will continue to make Newberry proud as they continue to play basketball in High School,” stated head coach Joey Long. “I also want to thank assistant coaches Wayne Pratt Jr. and Markell Williams for helping push these young men and providing them with valuable experiences on and off the court.”
