NEWBERRY — Russell Cann told guests at the annual Friends of Boy Scouts banquet last week that the Boy Scout program provided him with a father while he was raised in a single parent home.
Cann is executive chairman of Elauwit, a forward-focused content, technology and investment company. He told the attendees that he hires many Eagle Scouts to work in his company.
In fact, he said, an Eagle Scout is almost guaranteed a job with him.
“This is the best program in the country and it turns boys into men of character,” said Cann, guest speaker the banquet held last Thursday.
The annual banquet helps raise funds for local scouts, for the organization to give scholarships and to help defray its expenses. More than 800 youth are involved in the Blue Ridge Council of Boy Scouts.
The group also earned some $54,000 from the sale of popcorn. The program has 20 Eagle Scouts in it this year.
Cann said the Boy Scout program taught him morals and values.
“I never felt that I did not have a father,” he said, adding that the reward is also huge for those who are volunteer scout leaders.
