Botelho leads Wolves to wins over Ashford, Palm Beach Atlantic

HILTON HEAD ISLAND — The Newberry men’s tennis team earned a pair of victories at Spring TennisFest knocking off the Ashford Saints 7-2 and the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 5-4. The Wolves were led by junior Vinicius Botelho’s perfect day.

Newberry 7, Ashford 2

Newberry opened up the day at the Van der Meer Tennis Center with a big 7-2 victory over the Saints. The Wolves went a perfect 3-0 in doubles action, with a pair of 8-4 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, before at No. 3 the Wolves earned an 8-2 win.

No. 1 doubles saw juniors Michael Saunders and Botelho topped Luis Castilo and Arno Epping. At No. 2 it was sophomore Carlos Nicolopulos and freshman Fernando Espana who knocked off Diego Aviles and Alvaro Merino, while the Wolves’ No. 3 pairing of juniors David Sons and Newberry’s Jeffery Kiser defeated Pavao Krzelj and Carlos Pico.

Singles action saw Saunders, Botelho and Espana earn straight set victories at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Nicolopulos was the Wolves’ final victor in single action as he earned a three-set victory at No. 3.

Newberry 5, Palm Beach Atlantic 4

Doubles action in the Wolves’ second match of the day proved an important three points as the Wolves swept the Sailfish in doubles action. At No. 1, Botelho and Saunders earned an 8-3 win, while Nicolopulos and Espana won by the same score at No. 2 doubles. Kiser and Sons picked up a tie-break victory at No. 3 doubles to clinch Newberry’s three points in doubles action.

Singles action saw Botelho knock off Giuseppe Guarnieri at No. 2, while Espana toppled Matt Leeds at No. 4 for Newberry’s final point of the afternoon at Hilton Head Island High School.
