NEWBERRY — After 34 years of teaching in Newberry County’s school district, Doris Coggins was honored Thursday with a Golden Apple award.
The school held an assembly as the secret was revealed to Coggins by WLTX’s Darci Strickland, who presented Coggins with a basket of golden apples amid cheers from the students and faculty of Newberry Elementary where Coggins works.
The Golden Apple award is given to teachers based letters submitted by students and parents about their favorite teacher at Bi-Lo grocery store locations. The WLTX team then surprises a teacher at his or her respective school.
“The student who wrote the letter said she is very good, sweet and good on the smart board,” said Strickland. “She gives the best hugs.”
Coggins was shocked and surprised to receive the award since it comes at a time when she is approaching retirement.
“I love the kids and all the wonderful hugs they give,” she said. “I’m going to miss it because I’m retiring at the end of the year. The best thing about being an educator is knowing that when I look in their eyes, I see how rewarding it is.”
Also congratulating Coggins was her husband Jimmie, son Parkes and her three sisters, Jackie Boozer, Rachel Dickert and Nell Lominack.
Coggins began her teaching career at Little Mountain Elementary where she taught for six years before moving to Speers Street Elementary which eventually became Newberry Elementary.
Coggins, who has always taught first grade, said she enjoys how appreciative the children are and enjoys seeing the benefits of her teaching.
