KIAWAH ISLAND — The Newberry Wolves’ women’s golf team was the only Division II team in the field of the 2013 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate and was in 15th place out of 32 teams after shooting a 315 in the tournament’s opening round at the Oak Point Golf Course on Sunday.
Newberry’s 315 was its seventh-best round of the season so far, and the Wolves transition to the Cougar Point course Monday, where they shot a 307 just a month ago in worse weather conditions. The field is tightly packed, as Newberry’s 27-over par 315 is just five strokes behind Elon in sixth place. Tournament host College of Charleston leads the tournament with a 4-over par 292.
Seven South Carolina teams are in the tournament, with the Wolves only behind tournament leaders College of Charleston and one stroke behind Wofford. Newberry is one stroke ahead of Winthrop, five strokes ahead of Charleston Southern and Presbyterian and 22 strokes ahead of The Citadel.
Newberry was led by Lisa Brandl, who is tied for 22nd in the tournament with a 4-over par 76. Eline Askeland shot four strokes under her season average and is tied for 34th with a 5-over par 77.
Julia Daneshfar is tied for 67th in the tournament with a 7-over par 79, which is a stroke under her season average. Natalia Perez (Bogota, Colombia) is tied for 115th with an 11-over par 83 and Korey Coleman is tied for 153rd in the 172 golfer field with a 16-over par 88.
