NEWBERRY — There will be new T-ball fields in the City of Newberry this season.

The T-ball training league at Oakland Park will be playing games at Glenn Street Baptist Church when the season starts in April.

The move comes with the Oakland facility being converted into a tennis complex and the ballfields being relocated.

City leaders worked with the church to get a lease for the teams to play there.

Work is continuing to move the youth football fields to another location, according to City of Newberry Assistant Manager Matt DeWitt.

He added work should start soon on the new tennis complex.

The complex will be able to host tournaments as well as matches for the local high schools and Newberry College.

Currently the Newberry College teams are playing some of their matches at Newberry High School.

The courts will also host league play and the recreation department will be able to have clinics and tennis lessons.

The tennis facility will also be a state-of-the-art complex that will be open to the public.

The city council agreed to spend $8,000 on the design for the facility but will allot more funds as the project takes shape.

The work is a part of a revamping effort for the city park system that will include Vincent Street Park being turned into an outdoor basketball complex that will host tournaments.

The estimated $331,500 in work will include new courts, a playground, a new shelter and improved parking.

The city council will phase in the renovations to all 16 city parks over the next few years. City leaders also hope to construct a new recreational complex in the coming years.
