NEWBERRY — Hometown freshman Brandon Ahrens threw a complete game for his third win of the season and Ryan Cranmer hit a three-run double to lead the Newberry Wolves to a 3-1 win over the Augusta State Jaguars at the Smith Road Complex on Wednesday evening.
The Wolves move to 10-6 overall and next see action in a three-game South Atlantic Conference series at Wingate on Friday and Saturday. Augusta State is now 5-9 and travels to Stillman on Saturday and Sunday.
Ahrens moved to 3-0 by scattering eight hits across nine innings, striking out three and stranding five Jaguars in scoring position.
The Jaguars made solid defensive plays throughout the game to keep the Wolves from pulling away. Chas Goodwin hit a single in the third, followed by a Jermale Paige hard-hit single up the middle. Wesley Camp reached on an error and Cranmer then crushed a double to deep center field, clearing the bases and giving the Wolves a 3-0 lead.
Augusta put a run on the board in the sixth on an RBI single by Hunter Boose. The Wolves stranded two runners in scoring position in the remaining innings, but Ahrens’ solid work on the mound gave Newberry its fourth straight win and its ninth consecutive win at Smith Road.
Goodwin was 1-for-1 at the plate, but reached base in all three appearances. Paige was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
