NEWBERRY — Newberry resident Virginia Summer swam to a bronze medals in the Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championship.

The Florida Southern girls’ team, of which Summer is a member, finished in third place and the boys’s team took first place in the event held Feb. 13 through Feb. 17 in Clearwater, Fla.

Summer, who is a freshman, received the bronze metal for placing third in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke. Her 200-yard backstroke time met the NCAA “B” qualifying standard. She placed eighth in the 50-yard freestyle.

Summer was also part of three relay teams that received NCAA “B” qualifying times. The relays were in the 200-yard freestyle, the 400-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley relay.
