NEWBERRY — Newberry College’s spirit program will feature a dance team to go with its cheerleading team, helping fans keep their spirits high during games.
The dance team will perform at Newberry’s athletic events during the 2013-14 academic year. The team will also compete at regional and national levels.
Jenna Eyre, the dance team’s head coach, looks forward to building the program and believes it will help the college.
“This could really help to get Newberry recognized nationally, as well as helping raise enrollment,” Eyre said.
Eyre, whose 21 years of dance experience include service as a team captain, came to Newberry College after coaching the dance team at the U.S. Air Force Academy. She started recruiting students for the dance program. Members of the current dance team, which is a student organization, may also audition for the new dance team.
“This will be a great opportunity to help us grow as dancers and to have a name that is well-recognized, not only at Newberry College but nationally,” said Maria Rivas, captain of the current dance team.
Newberry College athletics officials look forward to the dance team working alongside the cheerleading team.
“These programs will work together to help improve the game environment and fan experience for athletic contests,” said athletics director Matt Finley.
