NEWBERRY — A new “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book will feature a favored piece by Newberry writer Sue Summer.
Summer’s column The Buffy Tree is being used a part of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul: 101 Heartwarming and Humorous Stories about the Joys of Raising Children of All Ages.”
It first ran as one of Summer’s many Women in Motion columns featured in The Observer. Summer started writing the column for The Newberry Observer in 1979.
The piece talks about what Summer’s daughter, Buffy, taught her one Christmas about celebrating the holidays.
Over the years, Summer was encouraged to send her columns beyond the area “so they could be shared with more people.”
The feedback that Summer got from the community encouraged Summer to send the column to the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” editors about four years ago. The column was submitted for a Christmas book.
“I had no idea they still had it in the bank,” Summer said, thinking her piece had been rejected.
Three weeks before Christmas, Summer got an email that her column was in the final round of consideration for the parenting book.
“It was a great Christmas gift,” said Summer.
Her story is number 78 in the book of 101 stories and can be found on page 253.
She will have a book signing at Books on Main in Newberry on March 15. Summer’s daughter, Buffy Summer, will also be on hand to sign the books.
