HICKORY, N.C. — The Newberry Wolves saw a four-game winning streak come to an end with a 91-79 loss to the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears in Shuford Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday night.

Newberry falls to 9-9 overall and 5-5 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Lenoir-Rhyne is now 14-4 overall and 7-3 in the league. The Wolves return home on Wednesday for an 8 p.m. match up with the Anderson Trojans (12-6, 8-2 SAC).

Quayshun Hawkins led all scorers in the game with 25 points, including a 13-for-13 night from the free throw line. Brunes Charles scored 12 points and Brandon Riley netted 10 points.

Five Bears scored in double digits led by 19 points from Denzel Dillingham. Jarvis Perry and Allan Jones each scored 13 points and R.J. McClure and B.J. Beasley scored 12 apiece.

The two sides were neck-and-neck throughout most of the first half, with neither side leading by more than one possession until Hawkins hit back-to-back three-pointers just over halfway through the period to give the Wolves a 19-13 lead with 9:12 to go in the half. L-R came back to tie the game at 25-all with 4:06 left in the half, but a three-point play by Charles just before the halftime buzzer sounded allowed the Wolves to take a 34-31 lead into the halftime break.

The Wolves pushed their lead to five points on a Riley layup on the second half’s first possession and held that lead for around five minutes until L-R tied it up at 41-all with 14:56 to go. The game was still tied at 44-all before a pair of Newberry technical fouls gave Lenoir-Rhyne four free throws to take a lead it would not relinquish.

The L-R lead was down to three points on a Charles jumper with 10:15 to go to cut it to 60-57. The Bears took true control of the game over the next two minutes, scoring seven straight points to push the lead to 67-57 with 8:30 to play. Both teams shot well in the half, meaning Newberry could get no closer than seven points for the rest of the night.
