NEWBERRY — U.S. Sen.Tim Scott made a brief appearance in Newberry at the Caterpillar plant Friday afternoon.

A Newberry Observer reporter made several attempts to meet with Scott at the plant but Caterpillar’s security denied access each time saying no media was allowed on the premises.

At the meeting, Newberry Mayor Foster Senn, Newberry County Councilman Scott Cain and District 40 Rep. Walt McLeod were in attendance.

The newly appointed Republican senator from Charleston was chosen by Gov. Nikki Haley to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint. He was appointed in January and his assignments for the 113th congress are commerce, science and transportation; health, education, labor and pensions; energy and natural resources; small business and aging.

Sean Smith with media relations in Scott’s Washington, D.C., office made efforts to contact the representative with Scott in Newberry.
