NEWBERRY — At a ceremony Friday, Walker Hall was unveiled to the public.

The former East Hall was dedicated to Billy Walker, previous chairman of the Board of Trustees. The decision to rename East Hall came directly from the Board of Trustees as a way to show its gratitude to Walker for his service.

“Billy Walker served 12 years as chairman. He served with passion beyond compression, giving not only time but his heart. The most effective way to reward him was by naming a building after him,” said Hap Pearce, current chairman of the board of trustees.

Walker graduated from Newberry College in 1969 with a bachelor of arts degree in political science and earned a J.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1973.

Also in 1973 he was admitted to the S.C. Bar. He was elected to the board in 1997 and selected as chairman in 2002.

Walker is currently partner in the firm of Walker & Morgan LLC, attorneys at law, in Lexington.

“Newberry College has been a Godsend to me. It is a place that has looked after me and taken care of me and I’ve been trying to make up for it however I can,” said Walker.

Andrew Wigger is an intern from Newberry College.
