Have you ever considered how your facial expressions are affected by what you are thinking?

Recently, while waiting to purchase ice at the ice machine on Wilson Road, I noticed the facial expression of a lady getting ice, and the look she was wearing was definitely not friendly or attractive. The look on her face got me to consider my facial expression.

You see, this was the day for our annual meeting so I had so many tasks to complete to ensure we had everything in place for this yearly meeting.

I looked in the mirror of my car and realized I was wearing that same irritated, far-away look the woman in front of me was wearing.

What an “A-Ha” moment.

Immediately I started considering that look, and by the time I looked in my mirror again, I had corrected my facial expression.

Now the world and all its people could see a relaxed, smiling face.

Oh, I realize that within a short time that smile was replaced with one of exasperation, dismay, or another of the many expressions that each of us possesses; however, since that day at the ice machine, I am constantly reminded of “that look” which makes me correct my very own expression.

Years ago, the City of Newberry was declared, “The City of Friendly Folks.” Now I ask you, how can we display that friendliness if we are not wearing a smile?

Many visitors come into your visitors center here at your chamber and are always impressed with our beautiful homes, our Opera House, our restaurants, the quaint shops, and they always comment on how friendly the people are, as well as how they just seem safe in our town.

Those comments are routinely heard and say volumes about Newberry, South Carolina.

So please include that smile as you get dressed every morning and wear it all day long.

Why? Because people are watching you, and that smile is the one thing you can wear in any season, in any weather, and you will always be in style. Just another way you can affect change.

By the way, another way you can affect how visitors view Newberry County is to become invested in your Newberry County Chamber of Commerce.

Why not call us at 276-4274 and allow Liz, Michelle, or me to tell you how you might review your talents and meld them into programs that will help everyone to smile.
