Kaheem Praylow made a lay-up 10 seconds into the game as he and his Newberry High Bulldogs never trailed in their 80-55 victory over Mid-Caroline Friday night in Prosperity.
The victory improves Newberry’s overall record to 17-2 on the season and a two win cushion as the top ranked team in the region at 5-0.
Both teams converted three free throws in the first quarter but Newberry had a 5-2 advantage in field shots to take a 13-7 lead .
Mid-Carolina and Newberry both scored 13 points in the second half as the Bulldogs still led by six points at the break, 29-23.
Against Alpharetta High at the Upward Classic last month, Jalin Alexander scored a third quarter personal best six points this season for him.
Friday night, the senior made 12 points during that same eight minute time frame which helped lead to a 28-13 run by the Bulldogs as they now had a 57-36 cushion.
Praylow helped lead the charge in the fourth quarter with his eight points while Greely Saddler also saw seven points go in for Newberry in the final quarter.
Alexander had an evening-high 23 points as he was the only player to score in each of the four quarters.
Praylow finished with 14 points while Trey Miller scored all of his 12 points in the final three quarters.
Along with Saddler’s seven points, Bennett Wilson and Jeremy Summers each scored six points as Newberry also got four points from Tovaris Cureton.
Jaylen Lindsay and Jaylen Reeder each scored three points while the Newberry scoring ended with the two points of Notorious Booker.
Danton Hyman and Javarius Nelson each scored 10 points for Mid-Carolina as Hyman saw nine points drop in during the second quarter while Nelson got six of his in the third quarter alone.
Cornelius Glasgow scored nine points while Chris Boyd and Zach Parker scored seven points apiece.
Brent Caldwell saw six points go in while Marcus McMorris finished with four.
Mid-Carolina, who drops to 6-11 on the year and 1-4 in the region, concluded their scoring with the two points of Tevarrres Taylor.
The second half of regional play begins Friday with Newberry traveling to Saluda and Mid-Carolina hosting Ninety Six.
