Wolves once again dominate regional rankings

ERIE, Pa. - The third Super Region One coaches’ poll of the season has been released, and the Newberry Wolves are once again atop the rankings and are the only school with a wrestler in the top six of all 10 weight classes.

The Wolves have four wrestlers ranked in the top spot of their weight class, with three wrestlers in second and one wrestler each in third, fourth and fifth positions.

Notably at the top of the region rankings is 125-pounder Jeff Vesta, who has a season record of 23-4 after going a perfect 5-0 at the National Duals with two falls and a major decision while allowing only one takedown.

At 149-pounds, Deral Brown is atop the region with a season record of 24-5. He now has a career record of 125-44 and needs just four wins to move into second place all-time at Newberry, with a potential to challenge for the all-time Newberry wins mark of 143.

The 157-pounder Taylor Knapp is at the top of his class with a season record of 18-4. Blake Ridenour is at the top of the 165-pounds class with a record of 20-6.

In second place in their class are 141-pounder B.J. Young with a record of 23-6, 174-pounder Travis Sheehywith a record of 21-6 and heavyweight Matt Wade with a record of 11-3.

Joey Grisko is in third at 197-pounds with a 16-9 record, Jared Holliday is in fourth at 184-pounds with an 11-5 record and true freshman Nick Lankford is ranked fifth at 133-pounds with a 15-6 record after going 4-0 at the National Duals.

The Wolves next action comes on Jan. 25 and 26 when they host the Super Region One Duals.

Newberry will wrestle Seton Hill (4-4, 11th in region), Pitt-Johnstown (5-2, 3rd in region), East Stroudsburg (1-3, 8th in region), West Liberty (2-0, 2nd in region) and Ohio Valley (1-3, 14th in region).
