The Newberry Academy’s region basketball schedule continued Friday night with a home game against Wardlaw.

Wardlaw and Newberry Academy are both usually in the upper tier of their region, so the matchup always has an impact on post-season aspirations.

Newberry Academy’s middle school teams tried to set the tone for the night with lopsided wins.

The girl’s middle school team remained undefeated and routed the visiting Patriots, 36–4.

Darby Dail led her team with 12 points. For the boys’ middle school team, Landen York led his team to victory, 42–29, scoring a team high 17 points.

The varsity girls continued the trend by eking out a 26–19 win, despite offensive woes for most of the game.

The varsity boys started off their game strong, but turnovers cost them down the stretch and turned into their first region loss, 55–45.

In the varsity girls’ game, it seemed like both goals were sealed shut, as neither team was able to convert open shots.

The Lady Eagles managed a 9–6 lead at the half.

Late in the second half, the Newberry offense started to click a little and timely trips to the foul line let the home team pull away.

With the win, the Lady Eagles remain undefeated in region play, at 4–0, and stand at 4–3 overall.

For the night, Andie Getz led all scorers with 8 points. Carman Franklin continued her solid play, adding sixpoints.

Emma Lindsay added six points, along with Kaitlyn Nobles’ four points, and Emily Senn’s two points.

The varsity boys started the game on a tear, opening a 16–3 lead after one period.

The visiting Patriots fought back in the second period, outscoring Newberry 17 – 8, and the Eagles retained a slim 24–20 lead at the half.

Both teams stepped up the intensity in the second half, and Newberry pushed the lead to 6 by the end of the third period. In the final period, the Eagles became a little impatient on offense and a little sloppy with the ball.

Wardlaw made them pay, and left with a precious region win. Dylan Skipper led the Eagles with 20 points, followed by Epting with 11 points. Justin Suber added eight points, Luke Carraway added four points and CJ Connelly had two points.

The loss left Newberry Academy at 4–4 overall, and 3– 1 in their region. Newberry Academy visits Richard Winn on Friday.
