NEWBERRY — Newberry College’s international students find their own ways when it comes to finding a place to call home on Thanksgiving break, Christmas break, and spring break.

Seventy percent of the students that attend Newberry College live in one of the seven resident halls and the other 30 percent live off campus.

When it is time to go home for break and the residence halls close non-international students already know where they are going, but the international students that cannot go home have other plans in mind.

“Our campus has always been open to helping out our international students,” explained Dean of Students Kay Banks.

Most of the international students at Newberry College usually bond with their teammates or a church family during the years they are studying.

These teammates and church families welcome in these international students as if they are one of their own. Local churches such as Lutheran Redeemer and Central Methodist contact Pastor Ernie Worman of Newberry College to ask about if there are any international students that need a place to stay during the times the residence halls close.

Not only do the churches help out, but Newberry College’s own faculty and staff have taken in international students that need a home away from home.

Newberry College is trying to find the most convenient way to help these international students that come from all over to find a place to stay when they cannot make it home during the breaks.

“We know that eventually in two years we have to consider to have the residence halls open during the breaks,” stated Banks.

As of right now, the Newberry College family and community is willing to do whatever it takes to make these international students feel safe and welcomed wherever they decide to go to have that home sweet home feeling.
