NEWBERRY — The Newberry Alternative School (NAS) has a started a innovative educational program for students earning their way back to their home school. The stage level system at NAS call for students to complete a community service project.
Most students have selected the literacy program of reading to elementary students. Three of the six students have selected this as their project.
Roger Perez is a NAS student returning to Newberry High School and he selected Newberry Elementary. Perez will assist in Jackie Holmes kindergarten class.
Trinitee Hunter is another student who read to Newberry Elementary school students. Additionally NAS students must earn 95 percent attendance, 85 or better grade point average and attend counseling sessions for individual graduation plans. This program was started by Dr. George L. Suggs, director of alternative programs at Newberry County schools.
Hunter is attending Newberry Middle and completed the community service Project at Newberry Elementary.
Bryan Benson is another former student who read to Prosperity-Rikard students as part of his community project for NAS level stage system and student goal setting.
