NEWBERRY — Bruce Nellsmith, who has been at Newberry College for more than 20 years, is responsible for helping create and run a thriving art department. He is an accomplished artist in multiple fields. Originally from Anderson, Nellsmith holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Nellsmith says his passion and appreciation for art began early in life. While shadowing his father in his shop, Nellsmith quickly developed skills in woodworking.
His skills in carpentry laid the foundation that helped form the artist he has become. Nellsmith worked at a tech school in Chapel Hill, where he learned many of the useful skills he says he uses to this day.
Nellsmith has become an accomplished artist. He is represented by City Art of Columbia, one of the largest art organizations in the state of South Carolina.
When he isn’t teaching, Nellsmith likes to paint at his second studio in Charleston.
His works have won many prestigious awards, have been displayed in galleries as far away in New York, and are even selling internationally in Canada and France.
Nellsmith has helped shape the current art program at Newberry College. He reworked the drawing, painting and sculpture classes in order to compete with art programs at larger schools.
The art program also added a program in graphic design and is also expanding into the subject of social media.
Nellsmith’s goal was to give students the opportunity to continue their studies at the best graduate schools. Students also get opportunities to study abroad.
Nellsmith also gives art students opportunities to exhibit their works both on campus and around Newberry.
He is currently organizing a student exhibit that will be on display in Wessels Library in coming weeks.
