NEWBERRY — Newberry County will celebrate the veterans and their service this weekend.
The Veterans Day parade will take place Saturday starting at 11 a.m. down Main Street in downtown Newberry.
For those who are participating in the parade, they are asked to line up starting at 10 a.m.
The parade is a free event for people to participate in and show their patriotism towards America.
“This is a great opportunity for the community to honor its veterans,” said American Legion Post 219’s Eugene Wilson, “We encourage people and groups to enter the parade and then for the community to attend the parade on Nov. 10.”
This year, the Newberry parade will feature Korean War veterans as their grand marshals. Any Korean War veterans, along with other veterans, are encouraged to participate in the parade. All veterans will be honored though.
“We’re looking forward to the parade and are pleased to honor all that served our country as active duty, reserves and National Guard,” said American Legion Post 24’s John Talbot. “We thank the community for participating in this salute.”
Aside from the city honoring the veterans around the county, the Newberry County School District is also honoring veterans with programs, assemblies and a district wide effort in raising money for veterans to participate in the annual Honor Flight in Washington, D.C.
The mission of Honor Flight is to take veterans to Washington, D.C. this month to honor them for their service.
All of the elementary schools are participating by raising money through Friday.
According to the physical education teacher at Boundary Street Eric Thompson, Dianne Cotney at Pomaria-Garmany helped to spearhead this event for the schools.
However, if anyone would like to donate money, they should contact their children’s school or if they do not have children, they may contact any of elementary schools to donate for the Honor Flight.
Little Mountain Elementary will be collecting money throughout the year however.
Pomaria-Garmany will actually have an assembly Friday at 1:30 p.m. in which a check will be presented for the money raised.
Also, Prosperity-Rikard will have a 10 a.m. assembly in the front of the school on Friday, according to Principal Tim Lyden who is an Army veteran himself.
Newberry Elementary will have a parade at 9 a.m. on Friday with the students participating as well as Newberry High’s JROTC and the community and veterans participating.
Newberry Elementary’s Jackie Holmes who is a teacher and an Army veteran herself helped organize the event at her school.
The middle schools - Newberry Middle and Mid-Carolina Middle - will both have an assembly at 9 a.m. on Friday and they will serve breakfast at 8:30 a.m. to the veterans.
Whitmire Community School will have their veterans day program on Monday at 10 a.m. with local veteran Scott Cain as the guest speaker.
