NEWBERRY — The turn out was huge and the good-byes tearful on Saturday as the community said good-bye to a local hang out.

In 1961 Daniel Maw opened a bar at the corner of Nance and Pope streets and for the past 51 years he has been serving his customers.

On Saturday the gatherings at Maw’s came to an end as he decided to retire.

While some fishing may be in store, Maw says he has a honey do list waiting on him at home.

But as more than 200 patrons gathered in and outside the business, they remembered that Maw has made many wonderful contributions to the community.

They also praised him as being a good friend, who loved and adored his business and customers and the customers loved him back.

In fact, many said Maw’s was one of the best locally owned businesses to have served Newberry County.

Maw was honored recently by District 40 State Representative Walt McLeod who sent a document thanking Maw for his contributions to the community.

Also some of his patrons cooked a barbecue meal for those turning out to say their good-byes to the establishment on Saturday.

But more than just eating was done as the patrons remembered, reflected and chewed on the good memories.

The building which served beer to many over the years will continue to give.

Maw has donated the property to Glory Tabernacle Church which is across the street.

He said he did not know what the church would use the property and old store front for.
