NEWBERRY — After months of campaigning, election day is here and voters will head to the polls Tuesday.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

After the election, votes will be counted at the Newberry County Voter Registration office in the shopping center with Bi-Lo.

In addition to the presidential race, Newberry County voters will have other choices to make from congress to town councils.

This year Newberry County was split into the Third and Fifth Congressional Districts with the western half of the county in the Third district and the eastern portion in the Fifth.

The Third District goes from Interstate 26 in the Jalapa area around the city of Newberry and to the Stoney Hill area. The Whitmire, Newberry, Prosperity, Little Mountain and Pomaria areas are still in the Fifth District.

In the Third District, Republican Congressman Jeff Duncan is being challenged by Democrat Brian Doyle.

In the Fifth Congressional race, Republican Congressman Mick Mulvaney is being challenged by Spartanburg businesswoman Joyce Knott.

For the Eighth Circuit Solicitor’s Office Republican David Stumbo faces Democratic Ben Shealy. Stumbo won the Republican race after defeating Solicitor Jerry Peace in June.

The only contested race for Newberry County Council is District One where Scott Cain defeated incumbent Edgar Baker in the Republican primary and is running against Whitmire Mayor and Democrat Tim Carroll.

Treasurer Karen Lindler is facing opposition from former employee and Republican challenger Jackie Haltiwanger.

For School Board in District 3 Brent Connelly is challenging incumbent LucyAnne Meetze and for School Board seat 6 incumbent Gregg Taylor is being challenged by Jessie Reeder. The seats are non partisan.

In Whitmire Billy Hollingsworth and Crystal Harsha are vying for mayor.

Several races in the county will be won by write-ins after no one signed up to run of the positions. These offices include the mayor of Little Mountain, Silverstreet town council and a representative on the Soil and Water Conservation District.

County Council members Kirksey Koon and Les Hipp, Sheriff Lee Foster, Coroner Craig Newton, Clerk of Court Jackie Bowers, Auditor Donna Lominick and District 40 Representative Walt McLeod all have no opposition. Senator Ronnie Cromer won his seat back after facing a host of opposition in the Republican primary.
