Hello everyone. Need I say cooler fall weather feels good? Cool night and comfortable days; I still can’t get used to the sight of folks wearing shorts to a Friday night football game. Ain’t like the days of old. This time on a fall night about 35- 40 years ago we had our knees, laps and hands covered with blankets and gloves. Maybe I have late October memories mixed in with late September. Anyway, Gottrocks the Birthday Fairy is talking early winter precautions and he already had his wings filled with antifreeze. He texted the birthdays from the service center, so let’s do our wishes.

We send our happy birthday wishes to Kevin Johnson, Samantha Hood, Carl Peay, Cathy R. Broome, Dustin Brown and to our former residents: Timmy Nates, Ralph Nix and Glenn Huff. A special belated wish to Eleanor Frye and Tommy Prince.

In upcoming events

The Whitmire Jaycees are hosting the Main Street Yard Sale this Saturday at 7 a.m. Vendor spots are $10 and $20. Checks will be accepted and cash is welcome the morning of the event.

The yard sale will be a great start to your day. Shop here in town and then enjoy German food and beverages at the Oktoberfest on Main Street in Newberry.

Get to know your candidates

The Jaycees are hosting a stump meeting Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. Local and county candidates have been invited to participate. Questions for candidates will be answered at the friendly hometown stump meeting. The public is encouraged to attend. Students, this is a good learning experience for you. Ask your social studies, history, speech, civics teachers to give extra credit for a paper written on the topics of discussion.

Church news

First Baptist Church will host its homecoming service on Oct. 14 with a covered dish luncheon after the service. Everyone is invited to attend.

The First Church Of God on Duckett Street members welcome former Assistant Pastor Timothy Vanlue of Whitmire to his full time duties as church pastor. Reverend Raymond Ford will be missed as “He did a wonderful job as our pastor for several years” according to members.

Whitmire band

We say congratulations to The WCS Royal Regiment Marching Band. Director Robert Gunning IV and the small but enthusiastic group of young musicians traveled to Pendleton, near the Georgia line to compete in the “Pride of Pendleton Marching Competition” on Sept. 21. The band competed in the Class 1-A division. The members brought home a third place award, an award for the Best Drum Line and the Best Colorgaurd.

The Whitmire band is the smallest school to field a band in South Carolina, as WCS is the smallest school to field a football team. We says congratulations to all band members, but a special congratulations to senior colorguard captain Erynn Hatfield. Erynn’s proud Mom JoEllen said “Erynn had a goal for her senior year, she wanted the cologuard to take the first place slot and they did,” said JoEllen, “She has been practicing so hard, as all of the band members have practiced hard.”

Yep, it’s that Wolverine pride that keeps that tight band marching and jamming. Mr. Gunning allows for creativity, responsibility, accountability with student section leaders. It’s hard physical work marching, playing music while marching and supervising your peers, in the sweltering late summer heat. It’s that Wolverine pride.
