A gift after a house fire has lived for 58 years and is now showing its blooms.

Edith and Ligon Boozer were living at 2046 Montgomery St., in the Mollohon Mill area of Newberry, when their home burned on Feb. 5, 1950.

The couple rebuilt on the same lot, and as a housewarming gift a friend gave them a snake plant in a little frog pot. The family put the snake plant into the their daughters’ bedroom.

Over the years, the snake plant grew out of its container and it was given to their daughter, Jane Hipp on her wedding day, Dec. 19, 1956.

Jane and Curtis Hipp moved to Armfield Avenue and in 1960, moved to Taylors, and again moved to Cayce in 1996, but the plant withstood the moves and time.

In 2004, the plant bloomed for the first time and has bloomed every summer since.
