A drop-in at The Free Medical Clinic Aug. 19, honored Dr. Eugene Epting, who along with Robert Summer, was instrumental in beginning the clinic.

The idea for the need of the clinic was started after discussions with the hospital, who supported the plan. Visits were made to several facilities across the state to become educated on the operations. Epting had retired from private practice.

He served as medical director, putting in much time and devotion to the clinic since its opening in December 2004.

He volunteered every Thursday to ensure that the patients had the necessary medical attention that is high in demand.

Since Epting has been one of the two principal doctors at the clinic, additional volunteer physicians will be needed.

The clinic has served more than 1,580 patients since its beginning. Medications are provided. Dental services are available.

Referrals to specialists are made as needed. The clinic continues to need volunteers, especially physicians.
