Two masked men wearing gloves ran into the Quality Inn on Wilson Road sometime between 2:30 and 3:30 a.m.
The night clerk had opened the door to the lobby to let in a late customer but forgot to relock the door once the customer left.
After entering the hotel, the two men armed with a pistol roughed up the clerk and duct taped his hands behind his back.
The men armed then tore the hotel’s safe from the wall, said Newberry Police Captain Chuck Counts.
The men then rummaged through drawers in the lobby and took the clerk’s wallet.
According to the clerk the men were in the lobby for a good length of time.
They then ran from the lobby carrying the safe.
When arrested, the men will face the charge of safe cracking, which carries a sentence of life in jail.
They will also be charged with armed robbery, kidnapping, assault and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
This is the second robbery in the Newberry area this week.
On Monday, a lone man robbed the Shell Station on Highway 34 at I-26.
Police are still investigating to determine if the two robberies are connected.
Anyone with information about the robbery of suspects are asked to call Newberry Police at 321-1010.
