Newberry College men’s golfers Sean Collard and Ben Lown have been named 2010 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

A total of 119 players in NCAA Division I, 55 in Division II, 22 from Division III and four from NAIA institutions earned the honor.

Eligibility for Division II Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar athletes require an individual to be a junior or senior academically, to compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, to participate in 70 percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, to have a stroke-total average under a 78.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2.

Recipients must also be of high moral character and in good standing at his college or university.

A graduating senior, Collard (Gauteng, South Africa) competed in nine tournaments for Newberry during the 2009-10 campaign accumulating a stroke average of 75.6. With a tremendous fall season and first tournament, Collard picked up a second place individual finish at The Honda of Columbia Fall Classic on Sept. 18-19 in Prosperity.

After shooting a 66 in the first round breaking a then school record for 18-hole low, Collard tallied 71 strokes in the second round to finish the tournament with a 137; a score that tied a school record at the time.

In his junior season, Ben Lown (North Augusta) participated in nine tournaments in 2009-10 compiling a season stroke average of 75.4.

Lown picked up two top-10 placements and one top-5 placement. Lown tied Collard for the lowest 36-hole score in school history by shooting a 137 (69-68) at the State-Farm Laker Invitational on Sept. 21-22.

Lown also tied the second best 18-hole low in Newberry history with a 67 in the second round of The Honda of Columbia Fall Classic.

With two golfers announced as GCAA All-America Scholars, the Newberry men’s golf has produced five in the history of the program.
