Teacher charged after sex with youth

A man with local ties has be charges with having sex with two Clinton High School students.

Atkins, 32, of Greenwood, who formerly worked in Newberry with the Clemson Extension, is on paid leave from the school district after he was accused of have sexual relations with one student for over two-years.

Atkins left the Clemson Extension Service a couple of years ago to work as an agriculture teacher at Clinton High School.

An arrest warrant claims he had sexual relations with one girl from August 2008 until June 3 at a Clinton motel.

A second warrant alleges Atkins, who taught at the school for two years, had sex in a classroom, greenhouse and a hotel.

Clinton Public Safety Director Stacy Drakeford said his department received the allegations last week and asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to assist in the investigation.

According to SLED releases, one of the students tipped off police and Atkins activity included kissing, touching and intercourse with the girls.

Atkins was released from jail on a $50,000 bond.
