Prosperity Police Chief Phil Reta says at 2:28 a.m. yesterday there was a driveby shooting at Pine Ridge Apartments.
Two of the bullets entered two separate apartments at the complex.
Reta says one bullet nearly hit a small child sleeping in a bed in front of a window.
Officers from the Prosperity department, Sheriff’s Office and Newberry Police Department converged on the crime scene as investigators began to try to fit the pieces of the shooting together.
Between two and six shots are believed to have been fired, said Reta. The new chief adds that bullet fragments from the scene have been recovered and on Thursday afternoon were being analyzed.
Officers also began to get statements from witnesses.
From those statements, officers received a couple of different reports of a similar vehicle and potential suspects.
As police continue their investigation, Reta said yesterday afternoon that interviews in the case were continuing.
He added that all the pieces to the shooting had not come together but that it could have been a random act and not over a dispute.
“While the town is trying to beef up its patrols,” said Reta, “small towns are still not immune to random acts of violence.”
Reta says that his office, Newberry police and sheriff’s deputies are continuing to work together on the case.
Reta also asked anyone with information about the case to call his office at 364-2121 as soon as possible.
