Newberry hitter Kendall Kinard nailed a two run homerun in a 15-5 win over Whitmire Monday night during the Union County Pre-Season Baseball Tournament.
Whitmire jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the game with runs at the top of the first and second innings.
Newberry answered right back scoring four runs at the bottom of the second innings to take a 4-2 lead.
The Wolverines managed another run at the top of the third inning, but the Bulldogs came back with two runs.
Newberry then went on a scoring tear in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking a 10-3 lead. Whitmire swung in two more runs to bring the score to 10-5, but the game was called in the bottom of the fourth inning when the Bulldogs scored five runs.
Kinard’s homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning was the first homerun at the new Timken Sports Complex in Union and the first one of his high school career, according to head coach Lindsey Stribble.
For Newberry, Brandon Ahrens was the winning pitcher.
Bulldog Bradley Gallman was 2-4 at the plate. Chad Davis was 2-4, Kendall Kinard was 1-2. Kelli Shealy was 1-3 and Ahrens was 1-3.
Cannon Griffith also came up with a pinch hit single.
Saturday’s first game
Union County shutout Newberry 10-0 Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets opened the bottom of the first inning scoring two runs while pitcher Jacob Freeman got three outs on three consecutive batters.
Union County opened the bottom of the second inning scoring seven runs. The Yellow Jackets scored another run in the third inning before the umpire called the game at the top of the fifth inning.
Saturday’s second game
The Bulldogs won the second game Saturdy at 2 p.m. against Whitmire 11-0.
Will Senn was the winning pitcher in the shutout.
Newberry was scheduled to play Union again yesterday at 5 p.m. but the game was rained out.
