Two major wrecks caused havoc on the roadways near Newberry County this week.

Monday, a T-bone wreck on Highway 395 near Kempson’s Bridge, just inside the Saluda county line, left the driver of a compact car pinned inside.

Members of the Prosperity, Newberry and Lake Murray rescue squads were called to the scene to extricate the driver.

As a minor fire broke out in the compact car, fire trucks from Fairview, Prosperity and Silverstreet were called to the scene.

Confusion over the exact location of the wreck, with it outside of Newberry County, led to so many fire and rescue units were called.

The vehicle did have some minor fire damage that was extinguished by bystanders and members of the Hollywood Fire Department out of Saluda County, prior to the arrival of emergency crews from Newberry County.

The driver of the compact car was reportedly airlifted Palmetto Richland Hospital with serious injuries.

In another wreck, Sunday night, a log truck overturned at the Newberry and Saluda county line on Highway 121 just outside of Silverstreet.

The wreck just inside of the Saluda County line covered the roadway with logs spilt from the truck.

The Newberry County Rescue Squad was called to the scene to help with several victims on the Newberry side of the wreckage.

The rescue squad then requested the Silverstreet Fire Department send a truck due to a fuel spill. Crews from the Department of Health and Environmental Control were also called to the scene to contain the diesel spill.

In other news, a 64-year-old Prosperity woman died Friday after being involved in a Jan. 12 wreck on Highway 391 in Saluda County.

The woman overcorrected her vehicle causing it to go off the left side of the road and overturn, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The woman was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol was involved in the collision, according to troopers.

The woman’s identity could not be confirmed through the Saluda County Coroner’s Office.
