Newberry Academy opened region play last Friday night against Anderson Christian.

The girls’ team started strong, getting a nine-point lead in the first quarter, but were unable to build on the lead due to foul trouble. The game was tied at the half 24-24, and still tied after three quarters 32-32.

The Eagles put the game away in the fourth quarter, winning 45-35.

Jessica Cole led all scorers with 25 points. Noel Franklin scored eight points in the second half to finish with 10 points for the night. Marina Miller had six points for the Eagles, and Kaitlyn Nobles and Ashley Dominick both chipped in two.

The boys’ team picked up its first win of the season, beating Anderson 31-25 in a rough game that saw both teams get into foul trouble.

Matt Bell led all scorers with 13 points and he also had 14 rebounds for the night. Derek Sligh had 12 points for the Eagles, and Cody Brown added six to round out the scoring.

Last night, the Eagles took on Wardlaw.

The girls’ game was tied 14-14 at the half, and Newberry held a slight three-point edge in the third quarter.

The Eagles were unable to hold onto the lead and struggled down the stretch, losing 44-35.

Cole led all scorers with 21 points, adding nine rebounds. Miller and Nobles each had six points for Newberry and Ashley Chaffee had two points.

The boys’ game was tied 14-14 at the half.

Turnovers and missed scoring opportunities led to a lackluster second half and the Eagles lost 40-30, despite Bell’s game-high 22 points. Jake Buzhardt had three points, and Alex Cole and Brown each added two points. Sligh tacked on one point.

Newberry travels to Laurens Academy Friday night for another region matchup, and plays at Whitmire on Saturday night.
