Newberry was dubbed Swine flu “epicenter” for the state with the first confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu virus after Newberry Academy students returned from their trip to Mexico in April with influenza-like symptoms.

County schools closed, some wore masks and hand-sanitizers dotted offices, schools and churches.

In response to the “intensifying outbreak” in the United States and world, the World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level.

The Newberry School District stayed in contact with DHEC about school closings, and after students returned in the fall, worked with the health department to inoculate students in school from H1N1.

“Everyone pretty much is a germ-a-phobe now,” Lorex drugstore manager Jackson said back in April.
