The Newberry College wrestling team and head coach Jason Valek announced four signees for the 2010-2011 season this month: B.J. Young, Sam Emburgia, Sonny Bugarin and Joey Baird.

B.J. Young, from Jackson, N.J., achieved an Honorable Mention at 130 lbs. from Wrestling USA Magazine’s rankings of the best high school seniors in the United States. Young, from Jackson Memorial High School, finished with All-American honors at 2009 NHSCA Junior Nationals with a seventh place finish. Young was also voted Outstanding Wrestler of District 21 with his first place district finish in 2009 at 125 lbs. Young will join fellow Jackson Memorial alumnus Sean Byrnes on the team.

Sam Embrugia, of Monroe Township, N.J., won a national championship at the 2009 NHSCA Open. Embrugia is ranked No. 28 at 135 lbs. in Wrestling USA Magazine’s high school senior rankings. He has also won two New Jersey Region 5 championships, winning a region title in 2007 and 2009. Embrugia also set a single-season school record for victories as a freshman when he compiled a 30-1 record in his first year at Monroe High School.

Sonny Buragrin, of Summerville, has qualified for the South Carolina state championships twice during his career at Fort Dorchester High School. He helped his team win a team state title in 2007 and the team also made it to the championship match last season. He also began his senior season with a 110-8 record.

Joey Baird, of Cary, N.C., made a name for himself in North Carolina at Green Hope High School when he took second place at the North Carolina state championships last year. He also wrestles for the Arrichion wrestling club.

No. 2 Newberry will travel to Kent, Ohio, February 13, for two duals against Division I opponents.
