Next budget cut may add up to unpaid leave

The first two big budget cuts for this school year were handled with stimulus money held within the district’s general fund, says Board Chairman Don Saylor, but that contingency fund is gone and another big cut sits on the horizon for January.

With the Budget and Control Board’s 5 percent across-the-board-cut last week, the Newberry school district is looking at how to best absorb the blow.

Numbers are not definite and Saylor says the board awaits administration recommendations. But he anticipates the 5 percent cut will dip into the district’s general fund and perhaps force program cuts, bigger class sizes and teacher and administrative furloughs.

District staff will meet after returning from Christmas break and the board looks to meet before the Jan. 25 meeting, Saylor said.
