The host school, Newberry Academy, opened play Friday night against King Academy.
The Newberry girls team found themselves down 18-12 at the half, but outscored King in the second half thanks to Jessica Cole and Noel Franklin.
Cole had 18 points and led both teams in scoring, while Franklin added 10 points. Marina Miller chipped in five points and Kaitlyn Nobles scored two points in the 35-33 victory.
The Newberry boys team also played a close game with King, but lost a heartbreaker 30-29.
Matt Bell had a game high 20 points for Newberry. Derek Sligh had four points, Jacob Epting had one point, and Ben Wislon and Cody Brown both had two points each for Newberry.
Saturday, the girls and boys teams from Newberry faced off against Covenant Christian Academy.
The girls suffered a 54-43 setback despite Noel Franklin’s 17 points and strong defensive effort.
The boys team lost to Covenant 54 - 45, giving up 24 fourth quarter points and giving up a six point lead at the end of the third quarter.
Bell continued his strong play with 19 points for Newberry.
Monday night was a matchup of Newberry Academy and Whitmire.
This was the second time the schools have played this season.
The Newberry Academy girls trailed 21-10 at the half, but stepped up defensively and cut the lead to 24-20 at the end of the third quarter. Jocelyn Hopp and Crystal Wallace of Whitmire set the tone in the fourth quarter, as Whitmire pulled away for the 43-32 win.
Hopp led all scorers with 16 points, while Wallace added 13 for Whitmire.
Other players to score for Whitmire included Mikeala Malpass with six points, and Lyndie McDaniel and Cassie Mulls each scored four.
Newberry Academy was led by Cole with 14 points. Franklin and Miller each scored seven points, and Ashley Chaffee scored the remaining four points for Newberry.
The boys game saw Whitmire holding on to a six-point lead at the half, and only seven points after three quarters.
The Whitmire boys put Newberry away in the fourth quarter, scoring 20 points and allowing only three, for a 50-26 victory.
Marcus Lindsay led all scorers with 14 points for Whitmire, with PJ Davis adding 12.
Other players scoring for Whitmire included Tracey Ruff with eight points, Alan Glenn with six, Joseph Brown with four, and Julian Hunter, Will Gossett, and Jonathan Ray Browning each had twopoints.
Newberry Academy was led by Wilson’s 10 points, and Bell’s five. Jacob Epting added three points, and Sligh, Brown and Alex Cole each scored two points.
Newberry Academy’s varsity teams play again Jan. 8 at home against Anderson Christian in a region game.
Whitmire plays at the S.C. School for the Deaf and Blind on Jan. 5.
