Icy roads made for dangerous travel around dawn on Saturday.

Fire and rescue squads were called out to the first of the serious wrecks around 5:30 a.m., when a car plunged down an embankment on Highway 76 near the Georgia Pacific plant.

Rescue crews used ropes to reach the wreck and victim.

As emergency officials were traveling to the wreck, they were asking for highway crews to be informed that bridges had iced over.

The second serious wreck hit the responder radios shortly after, with a car overturning near Parr and Clark roads in Pomaria.

Then a third call came in that a car had hit a utility pole on Highway 121/34 near Beaver Dam Creek at Silverstreet.

A fourth serious call was made when a vehicle overturned on I-26 in the Bush River section of the county.

Two people were airlifted to regional hospitals.

After the ice thawed, 16 wrecks had been reported county-wide.
