The election comes after Councilman Travis Gilliam decided to run for the open mayor’s seat and was the only candidate to file.
With Gilliam automatically becoming mayor, he resigned from his council position at Tuesday night’s council meeting. Gilliam was the only one of the three council members present for the meeting. Gilliam was appointed as mayor pro tem after Mayor Janice Havird and Council member Vera Nell Dale resigned.
Filing for the newly open seat will be held from Dec. 25 to Jan. 4. Any registered voter living in the town limits can file to run for the seat by signing up at Town Hall. The election for the seat will be held on March 9.
But before that election, an election to fill the unexpired seat of former Council member Dale will be held on Feb. 9. Dale resigned due to illness in her family.
The Feb. 9 election will be between residents Johnny Wix and Gerald Dominick.
Neither Wix nor Dominick can file to run in the March special election due to their running in the first election.
Voters will be using county voting machines to vote in the Feb. 9 election. This will be the first time Silverstreet voters have not voted on paper ballots.
In other business discussed at the meeting:
• Gilliam announced the town would hold a community meeting on Jan. 3 at 3 p.m.
During the meeting, Gilliam will be sworn in as mayor, the two candidates for the council seat will be allowed to talk to the crowd, the importance of the public participating in the upcoming census will be discussed and residents will be allowed to register to vote.
• Gilliam appointed local realtor Rita Bowles as the town’s clerk.
• The town is working with EMS to station an ambulance for 12-hours a day in the town. Gilliam said he is looking into how to cut phone and Internet cost by going with an air-card and cellular service instead of landlines.
• Gilliam reported that a locksmith was hired to open the town’s safe due to the combination being lost and that he was looking into getting a financial audit done. In previous years, the town has elected to save money by having a financial compilation done instead of an audit.
• Gillam said he would be contacting Newberry Electric Co-op about replacing some streetlights that are out.
• The next Town Council meeting is scheduled for Jan. 12 at 6 p.m.
