Eagles play in Roundball tourney

The Newberry Academy boys and girls teams are playing in the Roundball Tournament being held at King Academy in Batesburg-Leesville.

The opening game for both teams was Monday night against Laurens Academy.

The girls played a defensive game that had both teams struggling to score.

Noel Franklin set the tone for Newberry with 21 rebounds and seven points.

Jessica Cole led all scorers with 11 points as the the Eagles defeated Laurens 29-18.

Ashley Chaffee added eight points, Marina Miller two, and Kaitlyn Nobles one. The Lady Eagles are now 2-4 for the season.

The Newberry boys team played their best game of the season and pushed Laurens to overtime before falling 37-33.

The Eagles were led by Matt Bell who had 20 points.

Ben Wilson added four points and Derek Sligh added nine points for the Eagles.

The tournament continues throughout the week. Newberry took on Greenwood Christian on Thursday but scores were not available at press time.

The Eagle teams will play King Academy on Friday at 7 and 8:30 p.m..
