With noon today being the close of filing to run in Silverstreet’s special election, three have formally announced candidacy for the two open seats.
The special election comes after both Mayor Janice Havird and Mayor Pro Tem Vera Nell Dale resigned.
Councilman and acting Mayor Pro Tem Travis Gilliam has filed to run for mayor. Gilliam works for Senn Trucking Company and is a coach at Newberry Academy.
Residents Gerald Dominick and Johnny Wix have announced bids for the remaining open council seat.
Dominick grew up in Silverstreet and returned to his hometown after retiring from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
Wix is a volunteer firefighter in the town and works for the Newberry County Water and Sewer Authority. He is also the son-in-law of Havird.
The election between Dominick and Wix will be held on Feb. 9.
If no others sign up to run, Gilliam will assume the seat of mayor and there will be another special election to fill his council seat.
The Newberry County Election Commission will control the election and voters need to register by Jan. 7 with that entity to cast ballots in the election.
To register to vote, residents can go to the election office, which recently moved to Wilson Road in the Bi-Lo shopping center.
