Chapin tops Rebels, 60-51

The Mid-Carolina boys basketball team fell to Chapin 60 to 51 Friday night.

Fouls hurt the Rebels as they had 24 fouls for the game with 18 being called in the second half. Chapin had a total of 14 fouls. MCHS shot 16 foul shots, while Chapin shot 30 free throws.

Rebels Calvin Herbert and Adam Summer both fouled out of the game with five fouls each.

At the end of the first quarter, the score was Chapin 14 and MCHS 10.

The Rebels closed the gap in the second quarter to bring the game within one point with Chapin leading 25-24.

Mid-Carolina took a one-point gain in the third quarter to bring the score to 42-41. But the Rebels were not able to hang in the final quarter and the game-ending score was 60 to 51.

CJ Edwards lead scoring for the Rebels with 15, Krishawn Holley scored 10, Calvin Herbert scored nine points, Hubert Wicker scored five, Kendrelle Neal scored four, Adams Summers scored three, Jacobi Boyd and Mac Lake each had two points and Jared Parnell scored one point.

AJ Lang scored 19 points for Chapin, followed by Alex Nicolai with nine, Brian Kidd with eight, Micheal Melvin and Branham Wilder each contributed seven points, Conner Lowder and Ales Bueno each had five points in the game.

The Rebels record is now even at 1-1.

Mid-Carolina faces Emerald High School at home Tuesday.

Great Falls fells Bulldogs, 70-36

The Newberry High basketball teams took two games of a triple-header with Great Falls Saturday out at the Scott Gym.

The JV Bulldog boys trailed early in the first quarter before they took the 49-27 win, outscoring Great Falls 33-14 in the final three quarters of play. Jaylin Reeder led the Bulldog scoring, ending the night with 15 points, including 12 in the second half.

Other scorers for NHS included Dominique Quiller (nine points); Tavarius Cureton (eight); Malik Lyles (seven); MJ Wise (four); Jimmy Shippy (three); Jeremy Summers (two) and Tyon Williams had one free-throw.

The Lady Bulldogs scored its game’s first 20 points as it led by at least 15 points the final 22 minutes of play in its 39-22 victory.

Konica Praylow was the high scorer of the game with 14 points, including 10 in the second quarter alone.

Meanwhile, Kaylin Jones had eight points; Shatarria Sheppard (six points); Arnasia Boyd (five points); Shanese Boyd (four points) and Tyndell Mendenhall had two points.

The varsity boys continue to look for its first win of the season after the Red Devils took the night cap, 70-36.

GFHS outscored NHS 30-15 in the second half as Kerry Workman led the Newberry scoring with 11 points.

Seven other Bulldogs made the scoring column including Jaylin Alexander (six points); Jay Bethea, Kaheem Praylow and Hakeem Harding with four points apiece; Arkeem Young with three points and T.J. Boulware and Kendrick Lake each with two points for NHS.

Newberry will not play again until Saturday when it hosts Whitmire with the ladies starting at 6:30 p.m.

Wolverines clip Eagles, 50-31

The Wolverines boys’ basketball team cruised to a 50-31 victory over Newberry Academy on Friday.

During the first half of the game, Whitmire post player Alan Glen scored 12 points to pace the Wolverines, according to Newberry Academy coach Scott Gardner.

Whitmire’s defense created 15 first-half turnovers for the Eagles, resulting in a 22 to 10 first-half lead.

Newberry Academy scored eight points in the first quarter and only two in the second; while Whitmire scored 14 first quarter points and eight points in the second half.

“Coming out of the locker room Whitmire guards Marcus Lindsay and PJ Davis created turnovers to set up easy baskets for the Wolverines,” says Gardner. “They combined to score 10 points in a pivotal third quarter. Whitmire beat Newberry every quarter and they tied with 13 points apiece in the final stanza.

“The Wolverines defense was just to much at it created 29 Newberry Academy turnovers which resulted in easy scores for the Wolverines.”

Marcus Lindsay led Whitmire with 14 and Glenn chipped in with 12 points.

Ben Wilson chipped in nine and Derek Sligh had eight points for Newberry Academy. Sophomore center Matt Bell led the Eagles with nine rebounds.
