Local Shriners are donating stuffed animals to help children through tough times.

The Newberry County Shrine Club donated almost 300 stuffed animals to the Newberry County Memorial Hospital, Sheriff’s Office, EMS, Newberry Police Department and Highway Patrol.

The stuffed animals will be used to comfort children who have been in wrecks, traumatic situations, abused, neglected or involved with crime scenes.

Yesterday, each agency divided up the vanload of stuffed toys and will distribute them among their personnel.

Sheriff Lee Foster said some of the stuffed figures his agency received will be used as Christmas gifts for local needy children.

Newberry Police Lt. Kevin Atkins says his department tries to keep a supply of stuffed animals on hand for children are going through traumatic events or being taken from their homes.

Hospital Emergency Services Director Bill Grigsby says the emergency staff and EMS will use the stuffed toys to comfort children.

The stuffed toys were donated to the local Shrine Club from the Hard Rock amusement park at Myrtle Beach.

The Shriners have also donated a portion of the haul to the Shriners Hospital in Greenville where there is a toy room and the small patients can select toys from the room.

Area Shriners will also be hosting a party Dec. 15 to give local foster children gifts. Shriners “adopt” children at Christmas and help Santa provide gifts for them.
