After the mayor and mayor pro tem resigned from office, the remaining three members of the Silverstreet Town Council have not been able to find the town’s bylaws.
Acting Mayor Travis Gilliam said a search for the town’s bylaws concerning elections can not be found.
The young mayor went to both the local and state election commissions, he said, and determined that to run for the two vacant seats all a person needs is to be a resident of the town and a registered voter.
The filing will begin today at noon and go through Dec. 7 at noon.
The election will be held Feb. 9.
The Newberry County Registration and Election Commission will handle the election process and voters can register at the county voters’ registration office at 1927 Wilson Road in the Bi-Lo shopping center by Jan. 8.
The next town council meeting will be on Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall.
Once the new council member and mayor are sworn in, the council will begin the process of creating new bylaws to replace the old ones.
